Atsushi internalizes his problems. Unless they directly come up in conversation he says little to nothing about himself. His focus is and always will be at least for now, other people. That’s a problem. Without dealing with the past abuse, it’s left to linger like a chain around his neck. With only his own mind as a guide he isn’t getting very far with healing. This is why he needs an external influence. When people reach out to him, he opens up a little and deals with things rather than bury them so he could keep functioning.

So, it’s a good thing that he’s fairly easy to influence. Some people might even call him gullible. He’s not, Atsushi is just very new to the wide world. He’s even newer to his opinion mattering. Give him a little kindness and he’ll do anything he can to pay it back. It could be used to manipulate him but, so far the people who reach out to him have been concerned for his health and well being. His kind heart has always existed but, thanks to his coworkers at the Agency, he’s gotten the chance to show bravery and live a life with no regrets.

Unfortunately that was once used against him. When he was taken control of he was only thinking of protecting the others. He enjoyed his strength and felt somewhere close to really happy. He didn’t notice because he felt like he was all he wanted to be. He was blind. When reality came crashing in…He has always been looked at as a monster. Being regarded that way and with good reason, the guilt was overwhelming. But he didn’t let that paralyze him. No matter what he had to make it right. His friends were more important than his own fears.

His powers have done a great deal with his future. Now he’s capable of standing up to the kind of people that would use others or destroy them for their own gain. He has a place in the world. Friends. A mentor. It’s given him the freedom to grow beyond all the suffering he dealt with or, at least to endure more of it. It’s when he sought to use it that he asked himself if he saved others, could he be worthy of living? It was the first sign that once he heals enough, he’ll be a very strong person. In the beginning of the series he’s easily stressed out and hesitant. Now he has the confidence to fight back without pausing to worry about his own safety.
